QwikDetector® is useful for detecting leaks in furnace heat exchangers. The QwikDetector liquid is sprayed on heat exchanger surfaces, and if the QwikDetector solution leaks to the flame-side of the heat exchanger, the color of the flame changes. Technicians typically spray the QwikDetector solution directly on the flame to show the homeowner the affect on the flame and then spray on the exterior of the exchanger. If the flame is still affected in a similar way, the homeowner can clearly see that the solution has leaked through somewhere, meaning there is a leak. If the flame is affected, this provides a visual indication to the homeowner of problems with the integrity of a heat exchanger. The heat exchanger or the entire furnace should be replaced if a leak is found. A damaged heat exchanger could allow hazardous combustion gasses including poisonous carbon monoxide to enter into the air supplied to the building.
